Week 8:
Start your planning at least 8 weeks before your move. Begin by searching for a reliable and reputable moving company that can help you with the move. Make a list of all the items you’ll be moving, and start researching schools if you have children. Don’t forget to send notice to your landlord if you’re renting.
Week 7:
Finalize your moving company and book a rental truck if necessary. If you need storage, make arrangements for a unit. You should also apply for a change in vehicle or personal property insurance if you need to.
Week 6:
Make your reservations for flights, rental cars, or hotels if necessary. Arrange for shipping any vehicles if needed. Make a list of tax-deductible moving expenses you can claim later.
Week 5:
Sort through all your belongings and decide what to sell or donate. Update your memberships for the gym, clubs, etc. Secure important documents like passport, birth certificates, security cards, bank statements, etc. and make an order for packing supplies.
Week 4:
Start packing items in storage or the garage, and pack a bag with items you’ll need on your first night in your new home. Confirm everything with your moving company and dispose of any hazardous items or waste.
Week 3:
Notify all service providers at your current location about your move. Update your address with the post office at your new location, and inform agencies like Veteran Affairs, Medicaid offices, IRS, Medicare, etc. about your new address. Book a childcare service for moving day if you need to.
Week 2:
Book a move-out cleaning service or do it yourself. Remove any nails and screws from walls, clean and wrap your rugs, and disassemble any furniture that won’t be in use. Apply for leave from work and pay any pending bills or fees.
Week 1:
Clean your refrigerator and dishwasher, and uninstall or disassemble any appliances. Pack lights, kitchenware, etc. Make arrangements for trash removal.
